Express Checkout Library Stations
A testing protocol for comparing designs
Overview
The goal of this project was to analyze and compare RFID and bar code systems for express checkout kiosks in libraries. The results of the analysis were then used
to direct future product development directions.Process
The first step was to develop a testing protocol that could be repeated with reasonable consistency. The protocol was then documented so others could perform similar tests in the future. Using
the testing procedure, data was collected regarding the performance of the different checkout systems. The results were compiled and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and the findings were
presented to senior engineers.Takeaways
When multiple people conduct the same tests, having a well-documented procedure can help ensure that the data is valid, regardless of who performs the test. Testing early and often can prevent
major problems down the road and can help direct future development directions.
